In mid-2025, we decided to deep dive into using OpenAI to enrich our clients’ Google product feeds. And, it worked…really well! 🚀
The Problem we faced:
Many of our clients are e-commerce-based, selling a wide range of products, from clothing to technology and even agricultural goods. The majority of their products are live on their website with only the product title, description, variants, price and SKU.
Only having these 5 fields of data leaves a lot missing for Google to understand the product; the worst offenders often being colour, age group, material, size, product type, and product category.
We have manually fixed these before; however, when a client has 30k+ products, this is an impossible task. We’ve also used basic rules in #MerchantCentre to “pluck” the data from the existing fields, but this is never perfect and still leaves many fields empty.
The Solution:
We hooked up our client’s feeds to #OpenAI using very specific and highly curated prompts to fill the data gaps using the existing data fields and product imagery we already have.
The Result:
Our client’s #GoogleShopping ads blew up, almost overnight.
With rich product data, Google was able to land their products in more specific and targeted searches, so rather than just showing a selection of hoodies for the search “hoodie”, Google can deliver an exact-matching hoodie to the search query “Light Grey 100% Cotton Zipped Crop Hoodie”.
Specific search queries + Specific matching product = 36% Increase in conversion rate
That’s Not All:
We realised the power we had with curated #OpenAI prompts, client product data and world data at our fingertips, we could double down on the granularity.
– We’ve calculated product margin based on product cost, current price and calculated shipping cost based on weight and pushed that into Google Shopping for optimisation.
– We dynamically change the product title of winter clothing to include warmer adjectives when the average UK temperature is below 5°.
– We created “data cleansing” prompts that would detect bad data, such as a T-Shirt weighing 200KG, which has clearly had the wrong metric selected since it should be in grams, not KG.
Summary:
This is an excellent use of #AI for us, not some “AI agent” that promises the world, it’s a curated, specific and strategic use of AI that not only removes time-consuming manual tasks but also significantly improves our client’s performance for minimal cost.
